Happy Turkey Day!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  Today I'm thankful I was able to roll my ass out of bed, make some coffee and look at the snow falling outside.  It's a beautiful sight-enough to get me psyched for a run.

Luckily, I prepped for this run last night.  I left my running clothes in the dryer so I could warm them up while my coffee was brewing, and stuck my running shoes under the radiator in the kitchen.  By the time I was fully dressed for the run, I was already sweating and eager to get outside.

My little end of town was empty.  Hardly a car on the road. Between that and the extra silence that the snow seems to bring, I felt as though Lebowski and I had the world to ourselves.

At one point in our run, we crossed over the freeway.  Obviously, no salt truck have been out yet.  Traffic was already gridlocked with cars in ditches.  Seconds after taking a picture I watched another car go skating into the median!

Well, there's a way to start your holiday.  Hopefully, nobody was seriously injured and required nothing more than a quick tug back onto concrete!!!!

Well, after observing first hand how slippery the roads really were, I decidedly finished my run on sidewalks only and headed back in to start some holiday cooking and prep for our journey over the river and through the woods.
Be careful, everyone and have a safe and festive Thanksgiving!!

No Wheels-Just Rubber

Going on day 6 of my Jeep being in the garage and I miss the independence.  Sure, I'm free to take the truck once the hubby gets home from work in the evening-but by then it's too dark to get a good run in the park.  The past two days I've managed to run another 3 miles (minus the snot, even!) around the neighborhood, but I miss my trees and trails!  Luckily, the part we've been waiting on-which happens to be smaller than my pinkie nail-finally came via UPS and my awesome husband is in the works to repair it as we speak.  Hopefully, I'll be mobile and park-bound soon enough.

So, tomorrow is the big T day to kick off the holidays and kick everyones waistline all to Hell. I've been unofficially participating in an early start to my Holiday Running Streak for the past few weeks, but as of tomorrow IT'S ON!  Tomorrow morning, while everyone else is recovering from a ridiculous bar night or a night of dealing with unruly, excited kids, I will be up and out early to begin my 1 Measly Mile running streak that will last until January 1st.  No excuses.  I've already gotten my annual week of cold, flu and yuck out of the way.  I expect at least 1 Measly Mile ran outdoors or at the gym track (no "dreadmill" treadmill) every day.  I'm pretty excited.  It's a commitment to keep healthy, be mindful of what I do or do not choose to eat and get fresh air everyday.  It's also an excuse to be selfish and do what I love to do and side-step any holiday weight gain-and making New Years resolutions.

Anywho, I have to wrap this up.  Having gotten the hubby sick, I have a crock pot of chicken noodle soup to tend to and also a spinach and artichoke dip recipe to hunt down for tomorrows holiday pig out fest.  Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow with lots of good food and family!!!!

Happy Holidays!!!!!

YouTube vs. Old Man Winter

It's amazing how watching and/reading inspirational videos, articles, movies, etc. can get you up off your butt.  Today's 1 Measly Mile was originally bound for failure from the get-go.  It's another brisk and windy sort of day in south eastern Michigan, my jeep is "in the shop" for a few days and I'm stuck home with no way to get to the gym or my usual park for a run.  All in all,  I just wanted to head back to bed for some hibernation with a good book.
Then, I started tinkering around on the computer.  I looked up articles on running, browsed through Pinterest some and eventually popped over to see what was up on YouTube.  I decided to search "running motivation" and found plenty of videos to get me in the mood to stick my shoes under the radiator for a few hot seconds and go bundle up for a quick mile.
It was cold, but Lebowski was super giddy, dancing around with his leash in his mouth and I couldn't help but catch his enthusiasm.  Warm shoes also make a WORLD of difference! Needless to say I got into the groove of it and accomplished 3 wonderful miles.  It was even worth the 20 minutes of hacking and sniffling when I got home!

Maybe one day I'll be a beast!

23 Degrees And I'm Done!

Well, I definitely managed my 1 Measly Mile today. HO-LY CRAP it's cold out there!!! I had at least figured that once my blood got flowing I might not notice the cold (a balmy 23 degrees) quite so much but it felt like I just got colder! By the time I got home I had absolutely no feeling in my feet! That was pretty rough. Looks lie it's time to use some thicker socks and bury myself under a pile of blankets on the couch for the rest of my Sunday! Hope everyone else is keeping warm today!

5 Feet Back From Death's Door

About an entire week after getting sick, I can finally say I've taken at least 5 steps back from Death's door.  That's heading in the right direction, right?  I actually tried for my 1 Measly Mile on Thursday night at the track at the gym.  Five laps in and my body went on strike and I wheezed my butt back into bed.
Friday, I didn't manage running a mile.  However, the hubby came home with the great idea to go Downtown Detroit to see the Christmas tree lighting ceremony-never mind that I'm coughing and sniffling non-stop.  Of course I thought is sounded like a great idea!
In fact it was. We had a great time!  It was a little hard to finding parking so we ended up parking at the Renaissance Center parking garage and took the people mover.  The old thing is in desperate need of repair-or just retirement.  It squealed and moaned it's way around the city and there were moments I thought it might it might just fall off the rails and onto the street like a giant loaf of bread.

The closest stop was two blocks away from where the ceremony was going on, so we got in a nice walk and managed to squeeze through the crowd just in time for the countdown for the tree lighting.  It was beautiful, with the giant tree, the ice skaters and the live music.  Totally worth the scary ride on Detroit's outdated transportation system.

Afterwards, we walked to The Urban Bean Company over on Grand River.

It was a neat, retro bi-level coffee shop that BARELY took up much more room than a shoe box-but the space there was, was very smartly utilized.  A friend of ours happened to be spinning records that night so we hung around for a little while before walking back to the Renaissance Center.
The trip back was the REAL adventure!  After about a mile and a half of walking back through the city (and stopping for a cocktail or two along the way) we finally made it to the building.  One must go through the RenCen itself, take the escalator-or elevator-up to the 3rd floor to walk directly to the parking garage we were parked in. We entered the building from a different door, which off our sense of direction.  If you've ever been in the RenCen, you would know that there are multiple towers connected to each other in which all the walkways are circular.  If you don't very well know where you're at to begin with and the signage happens to be very vague, you can be stuck in there, walking circles for quite some time! Quite honestly, I'd swear we may have actually walked another entire mile in circles just trying to find the parking garage!

I may not have ran my 1 Measly Mile on Friday night, but I damn well walked a couple!
Today, though.....today was my victory! I ran 2 Measly Miles!  They may not have been all at once.  They may have been interrupted so I could blow my nose discreetly (I was at the gym). They may have felt like the most difficult two miles I've ever ran-but I ran them! Victory is mine! I am back from the dead!!!!

Sicky, sick, sick!!!

Well, I didn't run my 1 Measly Mile yesterday. Sick as a dog and I have no desire to see the outside world, so I'll also not be running today (Given the weather, I'd probably be blown away by all this insane wind, anyway!). Even if I took it to the gym, this congestion would suffocate me. Let's also recognize the fact that going and blowing my sick germs all over the place is not only obsessive, but rude as well.

So, I may need a two day hiatus from my goal, but I guess I am only human after all. Hopefully, I can be back at it tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great day and don't forget the hand sanitizer!!!!!

"I Never Get Sick...."

"I never get sick..."   Famous last words, right! I knew it was coming on yesterday.  I ran a good three miles yesterday-even switched up my normal route!  Never mind that it felt like I may as well have been dragging a dead elephant behind me.  Then, later on, the infamous throat tickle that turns into a little cough.  Then it's "Aw, crap!" when I wake up this morning with a horribly sore throat!

Well, I still got my 1 Measly mile in today, as well, on the track at the gym-but that was it.  That's all I've got.  Time to retreat back in to my warm house with some hot chicken broth to try to will this thing away.  SCREW WINTER!!!!!  That is all.

A Bad Run Is Better Than No Run

I'll start out today's post with this picture to remind myself

It was a cold one-but that just wasn't the problem.  Just one of those days you don't have the energy.  Yes, I did manage my 3 miles-but I can't particularly claim enjoyment.  I literally felt like I was dragging a ton of bricks! Did I not get enough carbs in my diet, yesterday? (I don't generally do breakfast) Did I need more coffee this morning?  I find it totally absurd that I might be getting sick.  I'm one of those that NEVER get sick-and, yes, I'm knocking on the wooden table to be sure I don't jinx myself!
But, needless to say, I'm glad I managed to get my butt out of the house at all because a bad run IS better than no run!  And to add one more silly little cliche saying:  The only run you regret is the one you didn't take!

Now, to warm myself up, I've got a crock pot of white chicken chili cooking and smelling up the house.

It's OK. You can be jealous!

Ho-Hum And La-De-Da!

Not much going on today.  Rather boring in comparison to yesterday.  Boring can be good, too, right?  Well, I got me a new pair of Brooks yesterday-a switch up from my usual Asic's.  I must say that there's nothing better than slipping on a new pair of running shoes and knowing they're going to be your new best friends for the next 6-ish months!

The new besties!

Today was a lazy gym day.  I did some free-weights and such.  It definitely bored me  to death, but I know it's necessary.  Can't run 3-6 miles everyday, right?  I did complete my 1 Measly Mile, though.  I didn't skip out on that!!

I know a person or two who is curious as to how you go about becoming a runner.  It's not as hard as it sounds.  When it comes to endurance and distance, it's all a matter of gradually (at your own pace) challenging yourself to go just a little bit further every time your body adjusts to your current level of fitness.

Shoes also count!!! TRUST ME!!!!! Shoes can either make or break a person! If you don't have the right shoes for your feet, you could end up injured and angry on the sidelines.  I have personally experienced this.  When I first started running, I went for whatever shoe was cheapest.  Let me tell you, those cheap shoes are not generally designed with any science or research towards a runners needs!  I've ended up with Morton's Neuroma, posterior tibial tendinitis, planters fasciatis and peroneal tendinitis.  All these injuries can directly or indirectly be traced back to running in the wrong shoes!  I'm not saying go out and just buy whatever $100 pair of running shoes-I'm saying look up a running specialty store near you and get yourself fitted for shoes that best fit your needs.  The shoes will probably run about $100-ish dollars, but they will keep you running happy and running far!!!!

Frosty Paws

For as ugly as the weather was yesterday, today turned out wonderful! Cold....but wonderful! Sunshine and last nights dusting of snow all over what's left of the fall colors.  At 26 degrees, my run started out kind of rough, but after about the second mile I was distracted by the beautiful day around me and kept on going for 5 more miles and of course the dog didn't mind. I wandered back through the trail I found the other day leading to the old campsite and got quite a few lovely pictures.
What I wish I had gotten pictures-or a video- of was the dog's reaction to the first snow of the season once I let him off the leash in the yard.  I don't believe that there is any joy parallel to that of a dog or a child running, rolling, playing in the snow!
Now, it's time to head off to the store and contemplate investing in a new pair of purple sneakers.  Lebowski's happiness may playing in snow, but my happiness is a new pair o' sneakers! ;)

Jingle All The Way And FML!!!

Yes, I'm a little late log in in today-but I did get my miles in today. Is it cheating if it was on the elliptical??? The machine told me I managed 3.... It was rainy and cold all day and I didn't really sleep worth a lick last night. Yep, I'll admit I was feeling a little lazy, but I suppose the elliptical is "simulated running." I had every intention of going back to the gym later with the hubby and getting the real experience taken care of, but rain turned to snow and my intentions turned to mush and we just ended up catching up on Walking Dead. Tomorrow morning I have every intention of steeling my resolve and taking my first trot through the snow. Eew, how I hate the cold!!!! But it's "1 Measly Mile," right? Hopefully, I'll get over being a sissy and 1 mile turns to 2, turns to 3????
Just signed up for a Jingle Bell 5k on December 7th. That means I paid my money and made my commitment, right? Gave my word, made my promise. I'm stuck now. Time to suck it up, buttercup!!!!! God help me! What have I done?!

1 Measly Mile!

I ran my 1 Measly Mile today. I'm too pooped to blog about it, though. Tomorrow is another day! Time to soak in the tub and get ready for another week.

16 Questions To Answer About Me

  1. What is your favorite exercise? I love gardening, but since Michigan has such a limited growing season, I'd definitely have to say running is what does it for me.
  2. How many children do you have? I have none. Just fur babies.  Maybe one day....
  3. What is your favorite memory as a child? Going up to Mackinac Island for summer vacation and feeling the beach sand beneath my feet as soon as we got there
  4. If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would it be? I would love to go back to Las Vegas where my hubby and I got married.  We had so little time to explore in the 4 days we were there.  I want to see it all!
  5. Why do you blog? Because I am a runner with very few (none) fellow runner friends or family.  Instead of boring them to tears and making them think I'm crazier than they already do, I just blab about it here
  6. Favorite tv show?  Oh, that's a tough one, there's so many that are good! Weeds, Rescue Me, Breaking Bad, Sons Of Anarchy, Walking Dead.....Pick one!!!
  7. How long have you been married/dating/single? I have been married to the smartest, wittiest man I've ever known with a killer smile for almost a year and a half, now.
  8. What is your favorite way to de-stress?  Running, a hot bath, whiskey (sometimes all 3 in that order).  Mainly running.  Running has gotten me through a lot:  Crazy family, a horrendous work environment, a loss of a close friend.  After pushing yourself for X-amount of miles, it's hard to be quite so worried and stressed.  It's hard to walk your ass back to the car, period!
  9. Do you have pets? I have 2 big, lazy cats named Cuddles and Taz, 1 huge, grumpy looking fish named Frank. My running accomplice, friend, coach and pain in the ass is a Yellow Lab/Husky mix named Lebowski
  10. What is your favorite movie?  The Big Lebowski.  I liked it so much I named my dog after the main character
  11. What do you want to be remembered for?  Living my life to it's greatest potential
  12. What is your greatest achievement?  Marrying the man of my dreams, buying a house, running a 10k....you know, the everyday miracles
  13. What is your favorite memory?  Non-childhood?  Definitely my wedding day and the day I purchased my first motorcycle
  14. Describe yourself in one word.  Unconventional
  15. How long have you been blogging?  One little month (Yep, I'm the FNG!)
  16. Share how we met.  I haven't met anybody via blogging yet, but I'm looking forward to the day!
Feel free to copy and paste this little questionnaire for yourself.  It's a good little time suck!

A Long Road Ahead Of Me

Today was a typical November day in southern Michigan: Windy, cloudy, cold and crappy!  Sad part is that it was 40 degrees out.  A lot of runners endure worse, I know.  I swear sometimes I was born in the wrong state, though!!! This year, since I'm blogging about it, you-my readers-are silently present to hold me accountable for my actions....or lack thereof.  I'm determined to stick it out this time!!!
Really, though, it wasn't that bad once I got moving.  It's just that first cold, creaky mile ya gotta live through to get warmed up.  I can only imagine what I look like during that first mile, hobbling, wobbling, wheezing and being dragged by a 60lb, ecstatic yellow lab, but once the blood starts moving it's ALL good!  In fact I managed another 6 miles!  Now, I know the running season is winding down, but I'm really thinking of signing up another race this year.  At the very least it'll be more incentive to keep me outside and NOT hiding under a pile of blankets until April. Further more,  with great thanks to my Runner's World magazine for the super simple why-didn't-I-think-of-that idea,  I plan on running at LEAST 1 mile a day for the rest of the year.  Run through rain, wind, blizzards, colds, flu, hangover, whatever! Just as long as I make sure 1 measly little mile get's done!
Well, I'm going to start searching for races.  This is my favorite saying for both motorcycles and running: Keep the rubber side down!!!!

Bouncing Back

Well,  after 6 months of dealing with posterior tibial tendonitis and taking it easy, cautious and slow, today I am FINALLY able to accomplish a 6 mile run!!! To a lot of runners 6 miles is probably child's play. To me, it's the gateway to FINALLY accomplishing a half-marathon.  It was actually my first 10k (6.2 miles) ever that put me on the injured list to begin with last June. I'll admit I was awfully under-trained for this race, and the first half of the race was a steep, uphill climb.  Around mile 4 I had a sharp pain in my heel and was praying some hunky runner would carry me the rest of the way-but that never happens in real life.  So, I gimped the last two miles and still managed to cross the finish line with a time of 1:02.....and the rest of my summer has been limited to the occasional 5k and LOTS of cycling to take a load off my foot...
But TODAY....today! Today is the day I ran my first 6 miler-hills included-with no pain and no walking! Now my biggest challenge is to keep progressing through the crappy Michigan winter months.....and, oh, how I hate the cold!!!

Candy Corn Burn-Off

Happy Day After Halloween! I'm not a kid, nor do I have kids and I STILL ate too much candy! Due to yesterdays all day, soaking rain, there were minimal Trick or Treaters in my neighborhood. Just this silly girl on the porch with her iPad, bucket o candy and some wine-a recipe for disaster!
Today, so far, has been an improvement. I decided to go try some new trails at a different park.  I found some horse trails that ran along the Huron River.  Nice, soft off road running.  The trails were a little squishy and wet, but the dog didn't mind and neither did I.  He DID mind me stopping every few seconds to take pictures, but I did a lot of sprinting to make it up to him.  The only downside is that the entire trail was about a mile and a half around from beginning to end.  I guess next time I'll have to make two or more laps.

Lebowski, The Dude, wants to go, go, go!!!

                                          So majestic!

A nice place for a break.

Hopping The Fence!

It's a beautiful, sunny day in southeastern Michigan.  A little chilly, but just enough to wake you up.  In the park I usually run in, there's a trail that's closed to the public.  I've been eyeballing it all summer.  I'm usually a good little runner and respect that road blocks are put up for a reason-but today I just could not abide!  Under and over the fence my dog and I went!
I know! I know! It could have been a dangerous situation: A woman by herself out in the woods where no one can hear her (My mothers voice was lecturing me the whole time, trust me!), but since I was in a relatively suburban to rural area I decided to take my chances.
The path way was beautiful with all the autumn leaves. There were quite a few hills and I'll probably be sore from them later, but I have no regrets. Long story made short, the trail led to an old campground now used for picnic table storage.  Nothing crazy. No misadventures or spooky stories for Halloween.  Sometimes it's rewarding to venture off the beaten path.  It might not always be legal or advisable....but it'll usually be fun-assuming you're being careful, of course!

A couple pictures from my mini-adventure!

Jogger or Runner?

I haven't gone running today since it's gym day. No feelings truly hurt here since I did spot a few <gasp!> snowflakes while looking outside earlier.  Tomorrow, I'll suck it up and go outside.

I ran across the old article below this morning on a subject I never really thought about. Do YOU get angry when someone calls you a jogger? Or is it really no big deal? Personally, I never really knew there was a difference until I read the article. I don't see being a jogger as a negative thing. I suppose since I started entering races 2 years ago, I'd be considered a runner. My conclusion is that no matter whether you pay to enter and compete in races, or simply just head out to enjoy the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other at a quick pace, we all have and enjoy the same general passion. Keep moving!!!!

My Nose Is Running-Along With The Rest Of Me...

So, I woke up this morning to frost on the ground and job layoffs looming in the next week, and decided it was a perfect day to play hookie and go running instead. A strange breed we runners are! But a few hours later I found myself bundled up just to the brink of immobility and the dog loaded in the car.

The park was beautiful: sun shining on the bright orange and red leaves and the pavement still wet from last nights snaining (yes, I'm one of those weirdos that call snow and rain "snain"). It was frigid cold-for me. Anything below 50 degrees I consider frigid, but I'm making an effort to stay off the treadmill and outside this winter. But I put on my headphones and rocked out. I love how you can put on some great music and the miles become so easy as you become lost the music and the scenery! As of today I vow to bring my camera with me to capture some of the more appealing sights on my runs.

For now I'll just include a picture my my favorite running buddy, Lebowski.

Test Run

Time to break in some sneakers. First attempt at a blog post...
